How Much Screen Time Is Safe for Your Eyes?

Screens have become a part of our everyday doings. We check our phones upon waking, work on our laptops, take part in online meetings, and at ease we go to social media or TV. This raises an important question: how much Screen Time and Eyes exposure is actually safe?

There isn’t a set daily screen time which is proven to be healthy for all adults. What is important is how long you are staring at the screen at a stretch, how often you take breaks, the distance at which you view the screen, lighting conditions, and pre-existing eye issues. Extended periods of uninterrupted use can lead to Digital Eye Strain, Computer Vision Syndrome, and Eye Fatigue.

How Does Screen Time Affect Your Eyes?

In terms of the relationship between Screen Time and Eyes health we see that it is mostly prolonged near focusing and reduced blinking. When you are into digital content you may also reduce your blink rate. This can cause the eye’s surface to become dry and uncomfortable.

Extended Screen Time and Eyes exposure may cause dryness, burning, blurred vision, headaches, or difficulty in refocusing. These are typical of Digital Eye Strain which also goes by the name of Computer Vision Syndrome. Eye Fatigue also sets in after long work or study sessions.

Research that is in the PubMed database reports that we see a connection between extended screen time and poor ergonomic postures which in turn report greater symptoms of Digital Eye Strain. Also it is to be noted that eye discomfort related to screens does not in itself mean that permanent eye damage has occurred.

So, How Much Screen Time Is Safe?

Instead of treating Screen Time and Eyes as a strict hourly limit, focus on continuous exposure. Your eyes need regular opportunities to shift away from near work.

The National Eye Institute reports that you should follow the 20-20-20 rule. For every 20 minutes spent on the computer take a break to look at a point 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This easy action will in turn reduce the constant focus which is put on your eyes.

Screen HabitEye-Friendly Approach
Continuous computer workTake a visual break every 20 minutes
Long smartphone sessionsPause regularly and look into the distance
Screen positioned very closeMaintain a comfortable viewing distance
Working in darknessUse comfortable surrounding light
Dry or tired eyesBlink consciously and allow regular breaks

Managing Screen Time and Eyes this way can help reduce Digital Eye Strain. It may also make Computer Vision Syndrome and Eye Fatigue less disruptive during the day.

Signs Your Eyes Need a Screen Break

Your body will let you know when Screen Time and Eyes exposure has had enough. Symptoms like dryness, burning, watering, heaviness, headaches, blurred vision and difficulty focusing may present themselves after extended device use.

Persistent Digital Eye Strain may cause issues with work or study. Also Computer Vision Syndrome may include neck and shoulder pain which is a result of screen placement and posture which in turn affect more than just your eyes. If Eye Fatigue presents itself within a short time of device use, look at your habits at the computer and think about getting an eye exam.

SymptomPossible Screen-Related Factor
Dry or burning eyesReduced blinking
Blurred visionProlonged near focusing
HeadacheVisual effort or poor ergonomics
Heavy, tired eyesEye Fatigue
Neck or shoulder discomfortPoor screen position
Difficulty refocusingExtended near-screen work

Making Screen Time Easier on Your Eyes

Healthy Digital Habits which don’t include total screen time elimination. Simple changes which improve comfort during long digital use. Place your screen at a distance that is easy on the eyes, reduce glare which is a distraction, and avoid very bright displays in a dark room.

Regular intervals are very important for the prevention of Digital Eye Strain. Also, remember to do normal blinking as you work. These practices also help to reduce the symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome and of Recurring Eye Fatigue.

If you put in several hours of daily device use in your work consider how we present content in terms of quality not just quantity. Six hours in between breaks and with proper ergonomics will have a different impact than continuous use for many hours at a time.

Conclusion

There isn’t a set safe amount of screen time for all which is considered healthy for the eyes. Instead we should aim at breaking up long sessions and in between put in some eye rest. Also by following the 20-20-20 rule, improving screen ergonomics, remembering to blink often, and using proper lighting we may see a reduction in Digital Eye Strain, Computer Vision Syndrome and Eye Fatigue.

If you are still in pain after making those changes, at ASG Eye Hospital we can perform an exam which will determine if your issue is related to dry eye, refractive error, or some other eye condition.
