LASIK Recovery Rules: Driving, Gym, Phone & Swimming After LASIK

Congratulations on your LASIK surgery! You're one step closer to enjoying life with less dependence on glasses or contact lenses. But to achieve the best visual outcome, it's important to follow the right recovery guidelines.

In this video, we'll explain when you can safely drive, use your phone, exercise, swim, and return to your normal routine after LASIK surgery.

The First 24 Hours

The first day after LASIK is the most important for healing.

During this time:

  • Keep your eyes closed and rest as much as possible.
  • Use your prescribed eye drops exactly as instructed.
  • Avoid rubbing or touching your eyes.
  • Wear the protective eye shield if advised by your doctor.
  • Mild watering, burning, light sensitivity, and blurry vision are normal during the first few hours.

When Can You Use Your Phone or Laptop?

Avoid prolonged screen time on the day of surgery.

From the next day, most patients can gradually resume using their mobile phone, computer, or television if their eyes feel comfortable.

Remember the 20-20-20 Rule:

  • Every 20 minutes,
  • Look 20 feet away,
  • For at least 20 seconds.

Blink frequently and use lubricating eye drops to reduce dryness.

When Can You Drive?

Do not drive immediately after LASIK surgery.

Most patients are able to drive within 24 to 48 hours, but only after their ophthalmologist confirms that their vision meets safe driving standards during the follow-up examination. Never drive until you have been medically cleared.

When Can You Go to the Gym?

Light walking is usually possible after a few days if your surgeon approves.

Avoid:

  • Heavy weightlifting
  • High-intensity workouts
  • Contact sports
  • Activities that may cause sweat to enter your eyes

Many patients can gradually return to regular exercise after about one week, depending on healing and their doctor's advice.

When Can You Swim?

Swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, and other water activities should generally be avoided for at least one month, or until your ophthalmologist advises it is safe.

This helps reduce the risk of infection while your cornea heals.

Other Recovery Rules

For a smooth recovery:

  • Wear sunglasses outdoors.
  • Avoid eye makeup for about one week or as advised.
  • Keep soap, shampoo, and dust away from your eyes.
  • Attend every follow-up appointment.
  • Never rub your eyes, even if they feel itchy.
  • Continue all prescribed medications exactly as directed.

When Should You Contact Your Doctor?

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

  • Severe eye pain
  • Sudden decrease in vision
  • Increasing redness
  • Persistent discharge
  • Flashes of light
  • A large number of new floaters

Early treatment helps prevent serious complications.
